Op 21-jarige leeftijd was hij "milicien korporaal" in het leger, in welke hoedanigheid hij in de problemen kwam. In het "Inschrijvingsregister voorlopig aangehoudenen" van de gevangenissen in 's-Hertogenbosch wordt hij vermeld als voorlopig gedetineerde van 1 tot en met 30 april 1915. Hij werd verdacht van diefstal en heling. De Auditeur Militair (zeg maar: de militaire Officier van Justitie) die zijn in hechtenisneming beval, beval ook zijn invrijheidsstelling. Er wordt geen melding gemaakt van een verdere gerechtelijke procedure. Door de krijgsraad in 's-Hertogenbosch werd op 30 april 1915 uitspraak gedaan. Hij was schuldig aan het aannemen van door midrijf verkregen geld, gedegradeerd van korporaal tot milicien en moest 14 dagen zitten.
