Jan werd in 1883 gekeurd voor de militie en wegens broederdienst vrijgesteld. Hij had toen een lengte van 1,754 meter.
Jan Jans, zoals hij het meest genoemd werd, was tot 1912 houthandelaar in Noordscheschut. Daarnaast bouwde hij bruggen ed. en wilde zijn handel graag uitbreiden. De samenwerking met H. Blanken was verre van ideaal. Door een tip kwam hij in dat jaar in contact met Harm Albertus Robaard (1868-1932).
Deze latere wethouder van Hoogeveen was, door vervening, eigenaar geworden van een werfje in Het Slood. Dit is de streek aan het vaarwater "het Alteveerse Opgaande" in de richting van Alteveer. Daarnaast bezat hij bossen aan de Kerkhoflaan in Hollandscheveld. Jan en Harm begonnen in "Het Slood" het gezamelijke bedrijf Robaard en de Jonge waarin Harm het kapitaal leverde en Jan de expertise en de afzetmarkt. Het bedrijf Robaard en de Jonge bestaat nu nog en is gevestigd aan de Wethouder Robaardstraat 1 en Alteveerstraat 97 in Hoogeveen.

Jan en Margje woonden na hun huwelijk eerst in Noordscheschut en na 1912 een aantal jaren op de werf van Lamert Botter in Hoogeveen. In 1916 verhuisden ze naar een woning op het bedrijventerrein aan het Alteveerse Opgaande.

Uit de overlevering blijkt dat Jan nogal rechtlijnig was is denken.
Jan was ouderling en ze waren streng gereformeerd.
Margje dreef een winkeltje op het Noord in Hoogeveen.
De ziekte van Jan die leide tot zijn vroege overlijden in 1927
veroorzaakte enige strubbelingen m.b.t. de opvolging in het bedrijf.
Jan ligt begraven op de oude begraafplaats aan de Zuiderweg in Hoogeveen.
Jan ligt begraven tussen "het gewone volk en zijn eigen mensen" terwijl Margje als enige in het familie graf is begraven. Hun graven liggen ongeveer 200 meter uit elkaar.
