Hij was burgemeester van Oostkerke van 30 oktober 1912 tot 1 januari 1939. Hij werd opgevolgd door zijn schoonzoon Georges Delputte. Op 5 april 1925 werd hij als plaatsvervangend lid in de senaat verkozen.

Medard Duchatelez werd begraven op 4 september 1947. Vanop het terrein van de hoeve het "Groot Kameroen" zette de rouwstoet zich in beweging richting kerk. Medard Edmond Duchatelez was de zoon van Jacobus Norbertus Duchatelez (die enkele jaren burgemeester van Pervijze was) en Juliana Avereyn. Hij werd landbouwer op de abdijhoeve "'t Groot Kameroen" in Oostkerke. Duchatelez werd ook politiek actief en in 1912 werd hij burgemeester van Oostkerke. Tijdens zijn burgemeesterschap brak de Eerste Wereldoorlog uit. Het dorp lag vlak bij het front en werd verwoest. Na de oorlog werd de dorpskern heropgebouwd net ten noordwesten van de vroegere locatie. Zijn dochter Maria huwde met Georges Delputte, die de hoeve zou overnemen. Duchatelez bleef burgemeester tot 1938, waarna zijn schoonzoon Georges Delputte burgemeester werd. Duchatelez was ook een tijd senator en lid van de hoofdraad van de Belgische Boerenbond. Hij was Ridder in de Kroonorde en Ridder in de Orde van Leopold II. Naast zijn vader en schoonzoon waren nog andere familieleden politiek actief. Een zus was gehuwd met burgemeester Demolder van Zoutenaaie, een andere zus met Hippoliet Ampe, burgemeester van Handzame. Een neef langs moederszijde, Medard Joseph Avereyn, was op het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog dienstdoend burgemeester in Pervijze.
