Notes about Hendrik Gerardus "Gerard" Dijst

Hendrik Gerardus wordt op 17-12-1908 "tot den dienst aangewezen". Zijn lengte wordt in het register niet vermeld. Op 03-03-1909 wordt hij ingedeeld bij de Zeemilitie. Op 28-07-1909 wordt hij uit de dienst ontslagen wegens lichamelijke gebreken.
Gerard was in zijn geest zijn tijd soms vooruit. Hij was fel atheïst, sportief, schaatste, en plaagde graag zijn streng katholieke familie. Hij liet zijn zoons graag op zondag aan een fanatiek katholieke oom diens schoenmakersrekening betalen en had dan vette pret als de man, dat geld toch schielijk aannam ondanks zijn tirade over schending van de heilige rustdag. De katholieke veel-kinder-gezinnen noemde hij maar konijnenhokken en zelf hield het bij twee kinderen.
Gerard was ook pionier. Hij leerde het vak van elektricien in de marine (Hij mocht dit doen, omdat hij reumatische klachten had). Hij startte in de Kinkerbuurt één van de twee eerste elektriciteitwinkels van Amsterdam. Hij verhuurde stofzuigers, legde met zijn zoons de eerste draden o.a. op het landgoed “de Duno” bij Oosterbeek. Hij redde het niet in de crisis. Hij weigerde (uit trots?) de latere examens te doen voor de beroepsvereniging certificering (hij was de anderen toch allemaal voor gegaan), en miste later zo de nodige herkenbaarheid om nieuwe klanten te krijgen. Hij werkte zich kapot en stierf jong in 1935. (bron: Gerda Dijst)

In de krant Het Volk van 18-3-1916 staat een advertentie, waaruit blijkt dat Hendrik Gerardus Dijst een Electro Technisch Installatiebureau heeft op het adres Bellamystraat 137. Op 15 januari 1919 wordt hij failliet verklaard. Hij woont op dat moment in de Bellamystraat 137. Qua data is er wat onduidelijkheid. In de faillissementsrollen is de minute ingeschreven onder nr. 1272 in 1907. In de krant Het Centrum van 17-8-1918 wordt zijn faillissement vermeld. Ondanks het faillissement geeft hij zijn beroep niet op. In de krant De Tijd van 08-10-1826 verschijnt een advertentie over de verkoop van Inventum-kachels. Ook Hendrik Gerardus wordt daarin vermeld als verkoper.
