De oudste vermelding van de naam van de familie Swinkels is te vinden in het begraafboek uit 1617 van de Sint-Clemensparochie van Gerwen. Daarin staat achter de naam van een zekere Aert Martens genoteerd dat deze overleden is 73 etatis anno in domo op Swinckel, oftewel 73 jaar oud inhet huis op Swinckel. Aert Martens is in 1544 geboren te Mierlo als zoon van Martin Aerts. In die tijd kregen kinderen achter hun voornaam altijd de voornaam van hun vader toegevoegd, het patroniem. Achternamen waren nog niet verplicht, ze werden soms wel gebruikt maar niet erg consequent. Bovendien konden ze ook veranderen, bijvoorbeeld in een bijnaamof in de naam van de plaats van herkomst.
