Ik heb het herkenningsplaatje van destijds 1e luitenant bij het Korps Motordienst Ingenieur Tjomme de Vries Utingeradeel, 6 december 1904 ? Ede, 5 mei 1945.
Hij was de zoon van Sjouke de Vries en Petronella Catharina de Boer. Toen de oorlog uitbrak woonde Tjomme de Vries in Haarlem in de Professor van der Waalstraat. Hij was opgeleid als mijnbouwingenieur, maar diende ten tijde van de mobilisatie bij de Motordienst van het Nederlandse leger. Hij was hier eerder toen zijn dienstplicht in ging al ingedeeld. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog is De Vries uiteindelijk terecht gekomen bij de Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). Hij was, vanwege zijn beroep als mijnbouwingenieur, gedetacheerd aan de sectie G-4 in de rang van kapitein. Deze sectie ging onder andere over het transport en de inwinning van ?solid fuels.? Toen Tjomme de vries op 5 mei om het leven kwam, had hij naar alle waarschijnlijkheid ook rapporten bij zich over de kolenproductie van mijnen in het Ruhrgebied. Toen Kapitein de Vries tegen het einde van de oorlog bericht kreeg dat zijn familie in Haarlem bijna om kwam van de honger besloot hij wat te doen. Op 5 mei 1945, de dag van de Duitse capitulatie in Nederland vult hij een militaire auto met geblikt voedsel en ongeveer 5000 sigaretten. Samen met een onbekende militair vertrekt hij richting Haarlem. Hoewel de Duitse troepen het commando hebben gekregen hun wapens te laten zwijgen, zijn de gevaren van de oorlog nog niet geweken. Bij een kruispunt in het gehucht ?De Klomp? aan de Rijksstraatweg tussen Ede en Veenendaal gaat het mis. Bij een ingegraven stelling van Nederlandse SS?ers is de weg nog bezaaid met mijnen. De auto van Kapitein de Vries raakt twee mijnen en hij en zijn compagnon komen om het leven. Dat dit tragische ongeluk zo goed gedocumenteerd is komt door het uitgevoerde rechercheonderzoek in het jaar erna. Omdat de auto afgeladen was met sigaretten en voedsel is de plaats van het ongeluk geplunderd. Op verzoek van de nabestaanden is toen ongeveer een jaar na de oorlog een onderzoek ingesteld. Zelfs de op dat moment geïnterneerde SS commandant is ondervraagd in dit onderzoek. Op 7 mei, toen een Duitse Pionierscompagnie het mijnenveld had opgeruimd, is het stoffelijk overschot van Tjomme de Vries weggehaald en begraven te Ede. In 1947 is dit via Amersfoort overgebracht naar de Algemene Begraafplaats te Bloemendaal. Kapitein de Vries ligt samen met een familielid begraven in graf J 124.
