De wederwaardigheden van hun gezin aan het einde van de tweede wereldoorlog zoals door kleinzoon Heinz-Josef (Jo) Gielen in april 2016 verwoord:
"Drei Tage, bevor Gangelt 1944 im November evakuiert wurde, haben wir uns mit 10 bis 15 Leuten unserer
Familie abends auf den Weg gemacht, um durch das Bruch zu unseren Verwandten nach Schinveld zu gehen.
(Boesten und Dohmen; 2 Schwestern von Vater in Schinveld und van de Camp in Merkelbeek)
Leider wurden wir aber von den niederländischen Grenzbeschützern geschnappt. Wir verbrachten eine Nacht
im Schinvelder Rathaus und dann ca. 2 Wochen auf einem Tanzsaal in Sittard. Dann kamen auch wir nach Vught.
Nur Oma und Opa durften wegen ihres hohen Alters und der gesundheitlichen Probleme in Schinveld bleiben
und kamen deshalb nicht ins ehem. Konzentrationslager. Opa und Oma waren zuerst in Schinveld, dann in
Merkelbeek bei Tante Trina und Onkel Albert. Hier ist Opa dann ja 1948 verstorben. Vorher hatten sie noch die
diamantene Hochzeit gefeiert. Später ist Oma dann wieder nach Gangelt zurückgekehrt, wo sie dann bei Tante
Trautchen und Onkel Martil gelebt hat. Da ist sie Mitte der 60er Jahre verstorben. - Mein Vater Franz hat von
diesen Dingen nichts mitbekommen. Er war schon seit 1939 Soldat - u. a. auf der Krim -. Am Brenner ist er im
April 1945 in Gefangenschaft gekommen, hat dann bei Mons (Belgien) auf einer Zeche gearbeitet. Nachdem er
dort bei einem Unfall 3 Tage lang verschüttet war, wurde er in ein "Genesungs-Lager" nach England gebracht.
Von dort aus wurde er 1947 entlassen. Eine verrückte Zeit, die Gott sei Dank, vorüber ist.
