Notes about Pieter Willem Bartelink

Pieter en Helena kregen 6 zoons van wie er 2 vroeg overleden. Ze hadden in Amsterdam een winkel in scheepsbenodigdheden, maar die liep slecht. Napoleon had de handel met Engeland en Engeland had de handel met Frankrijk verboden (Continentaal Stelsel). In 1811 voer Pieter met de Engelse boot John vanuit Portsmouth naar Suriname. Zijn vrouw met de kinderen bleef achter. Zoon Frederik reisde zijn vader later achterna. Zij keerde terug naar Schüttorf waar haar zoon Wijnand verbleef. Die stierf in 1828. Als arme weduwe is zij daar in 1840 overleden.
In Suriname was Pieter van 1817 tot 1829 directeur van plantage Limeshoop (later Bentshoop) aan de Warrapakreek en daarna van de plantage Sonnebloem aan de Cabbeskreek. De slaafgemaakte mulattin Mariantje met wie hij een relatie had werd door hem in 1825 vrijgekocht. Daarmee kreeg zij de naam Juliana Maria van Bartelink. De tussenvoeging "van" betekent "vroeger eigendom van".
