Joachim (toen nog Jo) had op het seminarie gezeten maar kwam daarvan terug. In Utrecht studeerde hij psychologie. In het jaar 1961/1962 was hij abactis van het bestuur-Derks van Veritas. Daar leerde hij Horty kennen. Hij had een psychische problematiek, waarvoor hij af en toe werd opgenomen. Portretfotografie was zijn grote hobby.
