Daarna is het afwisselend in gebruik geweest als pension, vakantieoord voor jongeren en als opvangcentrum voor Vietnamese asielzoekers. In 1982 is, onder meer met steun van Het Drentse Landschap, begonnen met de restauratie, waarna het als hotel in gebruik is genomen. Het landgoed Havixhorst ligt aan de noordzijde van het riviertje de Reest.
