    Willem van der Meer is omgekomen bij het Amerikaanse Bombardement, aan de Bloemerstraat 45A, te Nijmegen. Ook zijn dochter Gerritdina Remkes - van der Meer kwam om bij dit bombardement.
    Bij dit bombardement kwamen 800 burgers om en werd een deel van centrum van Nijmegen vernield. De Bloemerstraat was een van de zwaarst getroffen straten in de binnenstad.

    Volgens www.online-begraafplaasen.nl zou hij begravenzijn op de Algemene Begraafplaats aan de Graafseweg is in 1881 aangelegd ter vervanging van de drie bestaande kerkhoven in de buitenwijken Hatert, Hees en Neerbosch, die in de jaren 1881 en 1890 waren gesloten. Een uitbreiding van de begraafplaats aan de Graafseweg kwam er in 1903.
    Veel slachtoffers van het bombardement van 22 februari 1944 werden hier begraven. Nadat op 26 februari 1944 in De Vereeniging een burgerlijke, niet-kerkelijke rouwplechtigheid had plaatsgevonden, trok de stoet met een ‘onbekend slachtoffer’, waaraan tienduizenden Nijmegenaren deelnamen, naar de Algemene Begraafplaats aan de Graafseweg. Daar werden enkele honderden slachtoffers in massagraven begraven. De oorlogsslachtoffers zijn later op het ereveld van de Algemene begraafplaats Vredehof herbegraven, een aantal van hen heeft in overleg met de nabestaanden elders een laatste rustplaats gevonden. Op de begraafplaats staat sinds 2006 een monument ter herdenking van de slachtoffers van het bombardement.
    Na 1961 werden er lange tijd geen nieuwe graven uitgegeven, wel vonden er nog bijzettingen plaats. In 1980 is het zuidwestelijk gedeelte van de begraafplaats ontruimd om plaats te maken voor een plantsoen en speelplaats. Inmiddels beheert Stichting Begraafplaatsen Nijmegen de Algemene Begraafplaats aan de Graafseweg en worden hier weer overledenen ter aarde besteld.
