Heer van Gavere, Chievres, Liedekerke en Eksaarde. Hij streed met zijn vader en zijn broers in de slag bij Bouvinnes (De Slag bij Bouvines vond op 27 juli 1214 plaats nabij het dorp Bouvines dat tussen Rijsel en Doornik ligt. De plaats behoorde toentertijd tot het graafschap Vlaanderen, maar ligt nu in het Franse Noorderdepartement van de regio Nord-Pas-de-Calais.) en werd gevangengenomen. Na zijn vrijlating was hij een belangrijk vertrouweling van gravin Johanna van Constantinopel.
