Jules is omgekomen tijdens 'Schuwe Maandag' op 19.10.1914. Bij het begin van de oorlog werden door de oprukkende Duitsers veel burgers in Roeselare gedood (wraakactie?) en werden er ook veel huizen en andere gebouwen erg beschadigd.
