      Nederlands Onderduikers Paradijs

      De Noordoostpolder (NOP) viel midden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog - 9 september 1942 - officieel droog.
      De Duitse bezetters hadden het dus voor het zeggen in Nederland.
      Zij wilden echter dat deze polder snel werd ontgonnen; klaargemaakt voor landbouw.
      Ze hadden het gebied nodig voor de voedselvoorziening.
      In de Noordoostpolder werden heel veel arbeiders ingeschakeld om greppels te graven in de drooggevallen grond.
      Ze woonden in barakkenkampen, houten gebouwen in de polder.
      Maar de Duitse bezetter verplichtte gezonde Nederlandse mannen om in Duitsland te gaan werken.
      Dit heette de Arbeitseinsatz; de inzet van arbeiders.
      Veel Nederlanders wilden helemaal niet in Duitsland werken.
      Vandaar dat zij zich aanmeldden voor het werk in de Noordoostpolder.
      Van deze groep werd gezegd dat zij 'onderdoken' in de polder.
      Zo slaat de afkorting NOP niet alleen op Noordoostpolder maar ook op Nederlands Onderduikers Paradijs.
      Sommige Duitsers wisten wel dat veel arbeiders eigenlijk naar Duitsland moesten worden gestuurd.
      Maar zij snapten ook dat er in de Noordoostpolder gewerkt moest worden.
      Zij knepen een oogje toe. Dit duurde tot november 1944, toen werden alle arbeiders naar Duitsland vervoerd.
      De meesten kwamen pas na de bevrijding - 5 mei 1945 - weer terug.

      Nispen wordt na zware gevechten als eerste bevrijd op 26 oktober 1944. Op 28 oktober volgt de bevrijding van Wouw en op 30 oktober volgt Roosendaal.
