Elle était la nièce du roi de France François Ier et fut élevée sous son autorité à la cour de France. Elle épousa Antoine de Bourbon, premier prince du sang et fut la mère du roi Henri IV. Figure importante du protestantisme en France, elle s'illustra par sa rigueur morale et son intransigeance religieuse. Au début des guerres de religion, elle se sépara de son époux qui avait rejoint le camp catholique et implanta durablement la Réforme calviniste sur ses terres.
