Notes about Jacobus Johannes Craan

Jacobus Johannes Craan is vermoedelijk een Indische Nederlander, tegenwoordig Euraziaat genoemd. Als kind van een Nederlandse predikant en waarschijnlijk een Ambonese vrouw heeft hij gemengd bloed. Hij zal zelf ook trouwen met een Indisch-Nederlandse. In 1753 huwt hij met de 15-jarige Johanna Henriëtte Breekpot (ca. 1738), geboren in Japara, een district op het eiland Java. Zij is de dochter van Cornelis Breekpot en Margaretha Sophia Ongewassen. Deze laatste achternaam betekent in die tijd 'onvolgroeid'; zonder bad was je ‘ongewasschen’. Er zijn indicaties dat Margaretha Sophia deels van Japara-afkomst is. Japara is een gebied aan Java's Noord-Oostkust, Oostelijk van Batavia. Wellicht is haar moeder een onechtelijk kind van Eldert Ongewassen, binnenregent van het Chinese hospitaal te Batavia en een inlandse vrouw. Cornelis Breekpot, vader van Jacobus' vrouw en geboren in Middelburg rond 1710, kwam al op ca. 19-jarige leeftijd met het schip de Duynbeek voor de VOC, Kamer van Zeeland, naar Indië. Na achtereenvolgens garnizoensboekhouder geweest te zijn in Semarang (1735), 

Het vermoeden bestaat dat Jacobus Johannes Craan is verwekt bij een Ambonese vrouw. Eenmaal terug in het vaderland predikt Petrus Craan in Oost-Kappele en zeer vermoedelijk ook in Antwerpen. Hij sterft op 51-jarige leeftijd in Middelburg (1751).

Cornelis Hendrik Craan, zoon van Jacobus Johannes Craan wordt geboren in 1768 in Batavia en is gedoopt in de Portugese kerk aldaar.
Doopgetuigen zijn directeur-generaal Hendrik Breton (later voogd van de dopeling) en zijn echtgenote Sara Maria van Oordt. Sara is, net als Cornelis Hendrik,
een kleinkind van de wettelijke oma Elisabeth Sigismund, uit diens eerste huwelijk met Francois Poulle
