De familie (van) Vlastuin vindt haar oorsprong op de boerderij Groot Vlastuin, eertijds gelegen in de buurtschap Donkelaar tussen Scherpenzeel en Woudenberg.


Groot Vlastuin is eeuwenlang in bezit geweest van het Amersfoortse mannenklooster Mariënhof. 


In 1691 wordt Johannes Cornelisz van Vlastuijn beleend met de ernaast gelegen boerderij Wittenberg onder Scherpenzeel.


In 1706 wordt zijn broer Jan Cornelisz van Wittenberg de nieuwe eigenaar. Zijn nakomelingen noemen zich Van Wittenberg.
