gelegitimeerd door keizer Frederik II 1242; tracht vergeefs het huwelijk van zijn ouders alsnog door de paus geldig te doen verklaren Lyon 1244; bij scheidsrechterlijke uitspraak van de leenheer koning Lodewijk IX van Frankrijk aangewezen als opvolger voor Henegouwen (doch niet voor Vlaanderen), Parijs juli 1246; wordt bij een nieuw proces alsnog wettig verklaard als stammende uit een "putatief huwelijk" 25 november 1249; beleend door zijn zwager Rooms koning Willem II van Holland met Namen 1249 en met Rijks-Vlaanderen (Frankfort juli 1252), doch moet van beide afzien bij de hernieuwde schikking door Lodewijk IX (Péronne 24 september 1256) waardoor hij alleen (als in 1246) het opvolgingsrecht in Henegouwen behoudt
