De Tweede Wereldoorlog zorgde in bedrijfsmatig opzicht voor niet al te veel problemen. De bedrijfsstructuur werd in stand gehouden en de fabrieken draaiden door, afzetmogelijkheden werden gevonden in het Duitse Rijk. In de persoonlijke sfeer werd de Raad van Bestuur zwaar getroffen, Abraham Ledeboer kwam terecht in het concentratiekamp Neuengamme en overleefde de verschrikkelijke tijd aldaar niet.

Desondanks stierven er 55.000 mensen door de onmenselijke toestanden in het kamp, waaronder http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemie">epidemieën en gebrek aan http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voedsel">voedsel. Tijdens de oorlog verbleven ongeveer 106.000 mensen in Neuengamme. Het hoogste gevangenisnummer dat in de dodenboeken vermeld staat is 87.067.000

 Abraham Ledeboerpark


Het Ledeboerpark is gelegen in de wijk Bolhaar aan de noordoost-zijde van de Hengelosestraat tussen ’t Sander, de Slagmanweg en de Zomerdijksweg. Het park is van oorsprong het centrale gedeelte van het 46 hectare grote gebied “Het Wageler” vernoemd naar de boerderij en erven “Erve ’t Wageler” die in 1900 is afgebroken. Dit centrale deel werd in de 19e eeuw het landgoed van textielfamilie Ledeboer, mede-eigenaar van de grootste textielfabriek in Enschede “Van Heek & Co”. Abraham Ledeboer (1842-1897) werd in 1872 firmant in de textielfabriek van Van Heek, in 1926 opgevolgd door zijn zoon Abraham Hendrik Ledeboer (1877-1966), en in 1927 de gelijknamige Abraham Ledeboer (1903-1944) die in de tweede wereldoorlog in concentratiekamp Neuengamme bij Hamburg om het leven is gekomen. Het park werd naar deze laatstgenoemde Abraham Ledeboer vernoemd. Van 1880 tot 1956 stond in het park de villa van de familie. Met de bouw van de villa in 1880 zijn ook de tuinen aangelegd naar een ontwerp van Dirk Wattez (1833-1906) uit Delden, die ook het ontwerp voor het Volkspark heeft gemaakt. De toegangspoort met twee zuilen met beelden van adelaars aan de Hengelosestraat stamt ook uit 1880. Het 16 hectare grote Ledeboerpark in zijn huidige vorm is ontstaan omstreeks 1918. In 1956 is het park door de familie Ledeboer geschonken aan de gemeente Enschede om als wandelpark dienst te doen. Conform de schenkingsvoorwaarden is de villa van de familie Ledeboer datzelfde jaar afgebroken. Bezienswaardigheden in het park zijn onder andere de 30 meter hoge mammoetsboom die omstreeks 1890 geplant is en het in 1880 gebouwde koetshuis (nu in gebruik als bijenstal). Op het park is tegenwoordig ook het uit Usselo stammende Lös Hoes “Het Lammerinkswönner” te vinden.
