Stella Fontaine was de artiestennaam van Saartje Canes.


Saartje werd geboren op 6 april 1889 op de Jodenhouttuinen 36 in een gezin van 11 kinderen (Saartje, Benjamin, Mietje, Klaartje, Simon, Klaartje, Joseph, Sander, Salomon, Mietje, Rosa. Haar vader was Mozes Kanes (5 dec 1868) en hij werd op 20 maart 1943 vermoord in Sobibor. Haar moeder was Heintje Bolle (1870).


3 broers, Benjamin, Simon en Joseph, werden in Sobibor vermoord en Sander werd vermoord in Auschwitz, Rosa in Bergen Belsen en Salomon overleed in Warschau.


 


Stella Fontaine was een zeer bekende cabaretière, actrice en zangeres met een geweldige sopraanstem en ze trad in het begin van de 20e eeuw in Amsterdam op, onder andere met Louis Davids en Pisuisse. Saartje is de moeder van Hennie Blok en de grootmoeder van Diewertje Blok. Gedurende haar carrière was ze vooral bekend om haar gave om te imiteren. Het publiek kon tijdens haar optredens roepen wie men geïmiteerd wilde zien, en Stella nam de houding aan en imiteerde.


Voor de oorlog stelde Saartje al regelmatig haar huis open voor Duitse Joden die het nazi-regime ontvlucht waren.


Saartje maakte in 1962, op 73-jarige leeftijd, nog een film, "In Holland staat een Riddergoed". Saartje overleed op 9 maart 1966.
