In 1949, he and his second wife had a house built in Aerdenhout that for many years was widely regarded as one of the most outstanding examples of home architecture in Europe and even more than half a century later a website devoted to the narchitect, Bernard Bijvoet, devoted a gallery of photographs to it.
The (Dutch-language) website had the following to say about the architect:
De lange loopbaan van Bernard Bijvoet wekte vaak verwondering. Als architect brak hij door aan het begin van de vorige eeuw samen met zijn studievriend ir.J. Duiker (1890-1935). Vrijwel gelijktijdig werkte hij in Frankrijk samen met de ontwerper Pierre Chareau (1883-1950). Maar hij was altijd zeer bescheiden over beroemde werken. De architect bleef voor alles een bouwer, een complete architect, die het werk zelf liet spreken. Alleen de architectuur telde.
In 1925 vestigde Bijvoet zich in Parijs. Hij kwam in aanraking met vele beroemdheden uit die dagen, zoals: Robert Mallet Stevens, Chareau, de beide Lurçats, Beaudouin, Lods, Eileen Gray, Jean Badovici, Josephine Baker, Maurice Ravel, Bodiansky en Le Corbusier. Als rechterhand van Chareau genoot hij veel vrijheid. Het liefst werkte Bijvoet in het werk zelf, hetgeen in Frankrijk mogelijk was. De bekendste werken met Chareau waren het Club-House voor het Grand Hôtel de Beauvallon (1929) aan de Golfe de Saint-Tropez en het woonhuis 'la Maison de verre' (1931) voor de Parijse arts dr.J. Dalsace.
Het sluitstuk uit het tijdperk met Jan Duiker was het Grand Hotel Gooiland (1936) in Hilversum. Bijvoet voltooide het ontwerp van Duiker, waarna het bouwwerk in Franse stijl werd gerealiseerd, met een door Bijvoet ontworpen Grand Théâtre aan de achterzijde.
Eind jaren dertig was Bijvoet geassocieerd met E.E. Beaudouin (1898-1983) en M.G. Lods (1891-1978).
Bij het uitbreken van de oorlog vluchtte Bijvoet, zoals veel Parijzenaars, met zijn familie naar de onherbergzame Dordogne. Afgezonderd van de wereld was Bijvoets huis een geheim adres van de Résistance, de Maquis.
Na de bevrijding keerde Bijvoet terug naar Nederland en vestigde zich in Haarlem om een samenwerkingsverband aan te gaan met de jongere architect G.H.M. Holt (1904-1988). Daarnaast werkte Bijvoet ook samen met andere collega's. Holt bewonderde Bijvoet om zijn vakmanschap en gaf leiding aan het bureau. Bij grotere projecten, waaronder schouwburgen en culturele centra, werkten de twee architecten meestal intensief samen. Bijvoet raakte in deze periode gespecialiseerd in de akoestiek van theaterzalen. Van 1946 tot 1979 was hij lid van de Rijksschouwburgcommissie, aanvankelijk naast bekende cultuurdragers als dr.Paul Cronheim, Eduard van Beinum, prof.dr. Eduard Reeser en Johan de Meester.
Ir. Bijvoet ontving een koninklijke onderscheiding en was Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.
