Ludovicus Theodorus Meijs vervaardigde o.a. badkoetsen.

Vanaf begin 19e eeuw baadden de meeste vrouwen in zee in allesomvattende hansoppen c.q. badhemden. Het waren lange brede losse hemden met lange mouwen, dichtgeregen rond de hals en reikend tot de enkels.

Men ging slechts in het water vanuit een strandkoetsje om enkele malen (3x) onder te dompelen in de armen van een badman / - vrouw.


In 1885 mocht men in Katwijk volgens de politieverordening: "alleen nog baden in open zee zonder badhemd wanneer men gebruik maakt van een met paard getrokken badkoets, voorzien van een neergelaten zeil.".
