Johannes wordt geboren op 4 juni 1899 in Willemstad en woont in het Zuid-Hollandse Schiedam, waar hij werkt als brigadier en rechercheur bij de politie. Tijdens de Duitse bezetting wordt het takenpakket van de Nederlandse politie sterk uitgebreid. Zo moeten zij optreden als ordehandhavers bij de distributie van goederen die op de bon zijn gegaan, het bestrijden van de levendige zwarte handel en het tegengaan van afscheuren van Duitse verordeningen en bekendmakingen. Bovendien wordt de politie onder druk gezet om actief te collaboreren en ingezet bij de arrestatie van joden, politieke tegenstanders, verzetsstrijders en onderduikers. Veel agenten doen dit met grote tegenzin, maar een enkeling gaat daarentegen juist actief samenwerken. In Schiedam zijn de agenten Lukassen en Machielsen zelfs in dienst gegaan van de Sicherheitsdienst (SD) en verraden voor hen desnoods hun eigen collega’s.


In de middag van 21 juli 1944 luistert Johannes met elf collega’s op het politiebureau naar de BBC, waar het nieuws van de mislukte aanslag op Hitler van de voorgaande dag wordt uitgezonden. Op aanwijzingen van Lukassen en Machielsen overvalt juist op dat moment een SD-patrouille het politiebureau en arresteert alle twaalf de agenten voor het beluisteren van een Engelse radio, wat door de Duitsers als een zeer zwaar vergrijp wordt opgevat.


Via kamp Amersfoort en Vught worden de agenten naar de Duitse concentratiekampen gedeporteerd. Johannes komt na Sachsenhausen en Neuengamme terecht in kamp Meppen-Versen, een buitenkamp van Neuengamme, bij de Nederlandse grens. De gevangenen werken hier onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden in de steenfabrieken, kleigaten en turfvelden. Door mishandeling, slechte voeding en het ontbreken van medische zorg komen ruim 250 gevangenen van ziekte en uitputting om het leven. Bij het naderen van de geallieerde troepen (het kamp zou door de Polen worden bevrijd), worden de overlevenden geëvacueerd naar Neuengamme. Johannes is een van de gevangenen die bezwijkt aan de geleden ontberingen. Hij overlijdt op 26 december 1944, op 45-jarige leeftijd.
