    Johan Kwast werd op 5 maart 1942 op Java krijgsgevangen genomen en in een krijgsgevangenenkamp op Java ondergebracht. Op 29 oktober 1942 werd hij overgebracht naar Thailand/Birma. Daar werd hij ziek op 14 november 1942 (dysenterie) en overleed op 25 november 1942 in een krijgsgevangenenkamp in/bij Rangoon, Birma.
    Hij werd evenals alle anderen die gestorven waren aan dysenterie gecremeerd om verder besmetting te voorkomen. Zijn graf op het Nederlands ereveld Menteng Pulo te Jakarta (vak XI, nr.19) is dus symbolisch.
