Jan van Staphorst wordt vermeld in het heerdstedenregister van het Zuidwoldiger Rot in1784 op nr. 101. Hij betaald ƒ.4-0-0.
Jan van Staphorst wordt op 1 juli 1777 tot medemomber benoemd over de twee minderjarige kinderen van Egbert Hendrik Smit en aaltje Roelofs Ovinge, beiden overleden.Blijkens momberstelling van 4 maart 1776 zijn Jan van Staphorst en Griete Strijker buiten gemeenschap van goederen getrouwd. Zij bracht een vrij aanzienlijk vermogen in en dreef een textielhandel. Jans inbreng bedroeg 550 car. gld.Jan zal de textielzak van Grietje voortgezet hebben. Na het overlijden van Jan en Grietje zal de zaak voortgezet zijndoor hun zoon Marten van Staphorst. Marten van Staphorst vraagt middels een request van 10 juni 1796 om handlichting, welke hem verleend wordt bij en acte van Raden in den Etstoel. Zijn ouders zijn dan beiden overleden.
