Notes about Christiaan Konings

Christiaan wordt geboren op 1 maart 1901 in Heijningen als zoon van Christaan Konings en Grietje de Wit. Als Christiaan zes jaar oud is, vertrekt het gezin naar Rotterdam. Daarna verhuist hij door naar Amsterdam, waar hij trouwt met Maria de Wit en werkzaam is als grondwerker, groentehandelaar en los werkman. Als lid van de Communistische Partij Nederland (CPN) houdt hij zich tijdens de bezettingsjaren bezig met de verspreiding van het partijblad De Waarheid. Samen met zijn collega’s protesteert Christiaan tegen de anti-joodse maatregelen van de Duitsers en heeft een leidende, organiserende rol in de Februaristaking van 1941, het enige openlijke, massale protest tegen de jodenvervolging in bezet Europa. De staking komt als een verrassing voor de Duitsers die eerder hoopten dat de Nederlanders zich gemakkelijk zouden schikken naar het nationaalsocialistische gedachtegoed. De staking wordt dan hardhandig neergeslagen en met name de communisten worden als instigators en principiële vijanden van de nazi’s fanatiek vervolgd.

Christiaan wordt op 10 juli 1941 gearresteerd en vastgezet. Uiteindelijk wordt hij naar de Duitse concentratiekampen gedeporteerd en op 1 augustus 1942 binnengebracht in Dachau bij München (mogelijk na eerder in Neuengamme te hebben gezeten). Vier dagen later, op 5 augustus, komt hij daar om het leven. Christiaan is 41 jaar geworden.
