Ons aller stamvader , waar we mee beginnen , heette Lucas Peeters Meskens. Nochthans dragen wij allen de naam "van den Bergh ". De kinderen van Lucas Meskens werden inderdaad gedoopt met de familienaam "van den Bergh ".

In 1636 huwde Lucas met Catharina Cornelissen. We kennen van hen 5 kinderen met naam , voornaam en geboortedatum uit de doopregisters van de parochie Nispen.

Reeds vóór 1600 was de familienaam van den Bergh wijd en zijd in Huijbergen , Essen en Kalmthout verspreid. 

Tussen 1680 en 1750 waren er op het gehucht MMoerkant - alias Spilbeek - niet minder dan 20 gezinshoofden die de naam van den Bergh droegen en meestal , zoniet alle landbouwers waren: 5 dezer hieten joannes en 5 andere Sebastiaan.
