Op 15 Juli 1866 liet Stephanus Nelissen aan de gemeente weten dat hij gezien zijn ziekelijke toestand in de onmogelijkheid was om het lager onderwijs in de school voortte zetten. Hij verlangde dat er tijdelijk een vervanger op zijn kosten zou ontboden worden. Dit gebeurde en de hulponderwijzer van Retie deed te Weelde school voor 45 frank per maand. Schoolmeester Nelissen overleed te Weelde op 19 september 1866 om 3 uur ‘s morgens. Maria Theresia Pelkmans, zijn weduwe verdiende als kosteres in de kerk en "waschkeersmaekster” 120 frank per jaar. Met hem werd dan ook het tijdperk

Antonius Evers werd benoemd (red. :geboren) te Hamont op 14 november 1838 en huwde te Weelde op 16 februari 1867 met Joanna Cornelia Paaps, een zuster van Monseigneur Jan Baptist Paaps uit Poppel. In tegenstelling mei zijn voorganger was hij geen koster meer, maar hij was wel een tijdje organist. Hij ontving hiervoor 100 frank per jaar. Evers was voorheen hulponderwijzer geweest te Ekeren (6 november 1858) en te Antwerpen St.Willebrords (4 oktober 1863). Evers was blijkbaar niet tevreden mei zijn onderwijzersloontje, want hij was tevens winkelier, herbergier en schenker van sterke dranken. Andere inwoners kloegen dat hij hun broodwinning afnam en in de briefwisseling van 4 mei 1874 lezen we hierover het volgende: "Antonius Evers schoolonderwijzer van het lager onderwijzer voor den tijd van drij maanden met berooving van zijne jaarwedde in zijne bediening heeft opgeschorst voor ongehoorzaamheid, in het blijven uitoefenen vanverschillende beroepen, door hem of zijn huisgezin gedreven en zonder de noodige machtiging verboden worden". Zijn bijberoepen leverden hem waarschijnlijk meerop dan zijn onderwijzersambt, want op 5 maart 1877 werd zijn ontslag aanvaard en in mei van hetzelfde jaar treffen we hem aan als winkelier te Lier.
