Na studies te Gent (bij Ottho) verhuisde hij samen met schoonfamilie de Hendrik Smet - Johanna van den Corput, van Antwerpen naar Duisburg, Lengo en Heidelberg, waar hij theologie studeerde. Dan werd hij 1574 predikant te 'Hochum' (Hochheim?), te Frankenthal, 1576, dan te Dordrecht, vanaf 1578. Hij was van daaruit een belangrijk figuur in de ontwikkeling van de jonge protestantse gemeenschap van Holland (toen: 'Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk', de officile kerk van de 'Republiek van de 7 Verenigde Nederlanden'; later, 1816, 'Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk' genoemd)..
