Zijn artiestennaam nam hij aan in 1945 en is afgeleid van het Zuid-Afrikaanse liedje Bobbejaan klim die berg.[1]

Hij doste zich vaak uit als een cowboy en bezong volkse thema's, veelal in een aan de country-and-western-traditie ontleende stijl. In de jaren vijftig en zestig was hij bekend in Vlaanderen en genoot hij ook internationaal bekendheid. In de decennia daarna gold hij vooral als oprichter van en entertainer in het naar hem vernoemde pretpark Bobbejaanland.
