Baptized St. Gorgonius church Hoegaarden 18 maart 1712.

Godfather: Martinus Van den Put, godmother: Agnes Godts (sister-in-law of Clara Sweerts, she was married to Henricus Sweerts).

He took over the farm which his parents leased in Sint-Katharina-Houtem.

He was not just a farmer but also a brewer and a bandmaster (elected leader of the band in 1745). The family did not stay in Hoegaarden but moved around 1760 to Neervelp at the "Hof van Minderloo", as successors to father-in-law Louis Du Mont.

In 1746 the French army went through Hoegaarden and the family suffered under the occupation. A report was drawn up for the authorities on 12 May 1746:

There were many troop movements between May and September: 2,000 to 3,000 soldiers, mainly cavalry on 23 July 1746. 8,000 to 10,000 soldiers, again mainly cavalry and led by the "Marichal de Saxe" on 25 July. An army corps led by "le comte de Louwendal" followed by another corps under the command of "Le Comte de Clermont" on 30 July. More troops passed through on 5 and 24 August 1746, and the local pastor Henricus Sweerts wrote "Je sousigné Pasteur de la Paroisee de Hougarde et des Dependances Paijs de Liège certifie et attest d'avoir été présent... et de juger qu'celui est juste et reeël et qu'il n'ij en at aucune exorbiatnce mais contraire de la modération..." in the claims of the farmers including Josephus Vanden Bempt who claimed in total more 106.25 florins in damages and costs.

But the war was not over: in 1747 and again in 1748 (at which time it was a cavalery unit from Orléans) the French army was billeted in Hoegaarden andhe is mentioned by his nephew Servaes Sweerts has having suffered heavily under the occupation. The archives in Liège show that 10 hectares of wheat, rye, grain, etc. were plundered by the French. He also:
