    Joannes wordt geboren op 14 oktober 1893 in Tilburg als zoon van Dokus Wilms en Catharina Somerlinck en woont in Amsterdam. Hij wordt herinnerd als verzetspleger tijdens de Duitse bezetting, maar over zijn precieze activiteiten is niets met zekerheid bekend. Na arrestatie wordt hij in ieder geval afgevoerd naar Duitsland, waar hij terechtkomt in concentratiekamp Sachsenhausen bij Oranienburg, een kamp voor politieke tegenstanders van het naziregime.

    Daar wordt hij onderworpen aan een hard regime van urenlange appels en lange dagen van zware dwangarbeid in een van de buitenkampen in en rond Oranienburg, waarbij de gevangenen blootstaan aan stelselmatige mishandelingen. Ondertussen schieten voeding en medische zorg schromelijk tekort en zijn de hygiënische omstandigheden zeer slecht. Dagelijks worden gevangenen om het minste of geringste vergrijp opgehangen of doodgeschoten.

    Ook voor Joannes worden de geleden ontberingen uiteindelijk te veel. Hij overlijdt op 9 maart 1942 in het kamp op 48-jarige leeftijd.
