De rol van Desdemona in verdi's Otello werd gezongen door Louise Culp-Kiehl. Zij was op 17 november 1848 als Louise Charlotte Sophia Kiehl geboren en haar ouders waren toneelspelers. In 1874 kreeg zij een engagement bij de opera in Mainz. Zij trouwde op 5 mei 1887 in Amsterdam met de 13 jaar jongere solofluitist Benjamin Culp. Benjamin Culp was op 20 december 1861 in Oude Pekela geboren en de oom van de zangeres Julia Culp. In 1881 was hij naar Amsterdam verhuisd. Louise en Benjamin kregen op 29 juli 1887 een zoon Simon Benjamin. Louise Culp had diverse rollen gezongen bij het Hollandsche Opera Gezelschap, zong later bij de latere Nederlandse Opera en bij de Fransche Opera in Den Haag. Daarna ging zij naar het buitenland en had in Duitsland en in Amerika veel succes.
