Notes about Petrus Mathias Geubbels

In 1876 werd Petrus Geubbels hoofdonderwijzer van de Remigiusschool te Duiven. Hij trof, bij aankomst, een vervallen schooltje. De inboedel was niet bepaald overdadig. Er waren houten tafels en banken, twee ezels met schoolborden en de volgende leermiddelen:
1 stel maten en gewichten
1 stel vormleer
1 kaart der Nederlanden
1 kaart van Gelderland
1 kaart der maten en gewichten
Meester Geubbels was een doortastend man. Hij was gehuwd met een burgemeetstersdochter en had kennis in de 'betere kringen'. Ook met de burgemeester van Duiven, H.J.H. Libourel, kon hij het prima vinden. Beiden waren het er over eens, dat het oude schooltje aan vervanging toe was. In 1880 kwamen het leerlingen uit Loo bij. Duiven kreeg een nieuwe school.
In 1892 nam de heer Geubbels ontslag als hoofdonderwijzer en startte het Instituut Geubbels, dat heeft ruim 50 jaar bestaan heeft tot 1943. Het was een internaat voor jongens van ouders uit de betere kringen. Het had een uitstekende naam. Het onderwijsniveau werd 'in den lande' geroemd. Het instituut wordt tot 1921 geleid door Petrus Geubbels en daarna door zijn zoon Adrianus Geubbels.`
