Notes about Dirk Jans

Een snik (ook snikke of Schnicke) was een zeislchip met één mast voor d binnenvaart. Dit was het populairste scheepstype voor de beurtvaart. Daarnaast was de snik een vissersschip met twee masten, in gebruik in het waddengebied. Aangezien deze schepen in nauwe vaarten en bij windstilte vaak getrokken werden, wordt de snik in veel woordenlijsten ten onrechte als een synoniem voor trekschuit gegeven. Alleen in de provincie Groningen was het gebruik van snikken als trekschuiten algemeen.
