Jan wordt geboren op 1 oktober 1904 in Tilburg. Na het doorlopen van de HBS-B-opleiding aan het Sint-Odulphuslyceum gaat hij thuis in de ijzerhandel aan de slag en werkt zich daar op tot directeur. Daarnaast is hij reservekapitein en aangesloten bij het Vrijwillige Landstormkorps. Hij staat bekend als een opgewekt en ontwikkeld persoon die zijn vrijwillig aangegane verplichtingen zeer serieus neemt.
Na de Duitse inval belandt Jan al snel in de illegaliteit. Samen met onder andere Jan van de Mortel is hij betrokken bij de verspreiding van illegale bladen. Op 8 december 1941 wordt hij door de Duitse autoriteiten gearresteerd en vastgezet in het 'Oranjehotel' in Scheveningen. Hij krijgt de status van Nacht und Nebel-gevangene, wat inhoudt dat hij spoorloos moet verdwijnen in de concentratiekampen, zonder dat de nabestaanden ooit iets over zijn lot vernemen.
Via kamp Amersfoort volgt Jans deportatie naar de Duitse kampen. Achtereenvolgens belandt hij in Buchenwald, Dachau en Natzweiler-Struthof, tegenwoordig in de Franse Elzas. Via Natzweiler wordt hij doorgezonden naar het buitenkamp Dautmergen en ten slotte naar Vaihingen an der Enz. Zijn sterke geloofsovertuiging is op dat moment het enige dat hem op de been houdt, maar op 29 december 1944 bezwijkt hij in Vaihingen aan de gevolgen van ondervoeding en vlektyfus, terwijl hij mishandeld en gedwongen wordt fysiek uitputtend werk te verrichten. Jan is 40 jaar geworden.
