Jan van Galen is op 21 januari 1949 als cadet-vlieger verongelukt met een Piper L-4 Cub in Nederlands Indië, waar hij door de LMN (Luchtmacht Nederland) bij het KNIL werd gedetacheerd bij nummer 17 VARWA-squadron.
