Notes about Joannes Baptista "Jan Baptist" Clephas

Jan Baptist kwam op 5-5-1787 vanuit Herten, Merum en Ool naar Leende. In 1797 richtte hij op eigen terrein een rosoliemolen (door een paard, ros, in beweging gezet) op voor de vervaardiging van lijnolie uit lijn- en koolzaad t.b.v. verf en veekoeken. Hij werd samen met Hermanus Roijaers, Jacobus Mack, Hendrikus Hendrik Kox, Reijnier van der Zanden, Godefridus Raessens, Joseph Tielens, Jan Peter Bax en Jan van Someren aangesteld tot municipaliteitslid van Leende, nadat de vorige leden door L.Swinkels en H.G.van Brussel zijn ontslagen namens het Intermediair Administratief Bestuur van het voormalig gewest van Bataafsch Brabant volgs. last d.d. 20-3-1798. Hun eed luidde : Ik beloove op mijn burgertrouw dat ik met alle mijne vermogens den post van lid der Municipalitiet van Leende, mij opgelegd, getrouw zal waarnemen. Op 2-4-1798 werd J.B. aangesteld tot secretaris van de commissie van binnenlandse correspondentie, "ten eijnde een wakend oog te houden op de handelingen van alle bekenden en verdachte vijanden des vaderlands" (ORA-HLZ 30). Als raadslid maakte Jan Baptist mee de overgang ("naasting") van (grote) kerk en pastorie van het Gereformeerde Kerkgenootschap naar het Rooms gezinde Kerkgenootschap (relatieve meerderheid in Leende). Aanstelling door de municipaliteijt van de geeligeerde borgemeesters van Leende voor 1799 : Laurens Jan Bax voor de Strijperstraat, Jan Baptist Cleophas over de Leenderstraat en Jan Hijacinthus Engelen voor de Oistericker en Boshovense straat. In 1811 is hij maire van Leende. Als maire in het keizerrijk benoemd zette Jan Baptist de funktie voort als burgemeester in het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (1812-1821). In Leende Adm.Archief 484 d.d. 15-10-1823 klachten over de financiële administratie van voormalig burgemeester J.B.Clephas. In 1828 kreeg een koe van J.B. de pokken en werd op hoger gezag gedood, met schadeloosstelling. (Leende A.A. 486 fol 65 16-1-1828). Op 3-9-1784 koopt J.B. "een huijsinge en brouwerije, stalling, schuur, hof en aangelag binnen Leende aan de straat tegenover de parochiaale kerk 6 R (volgens verponding, doch veel grooter)". (ORA-HLZ 1912).
