Notes about Arngrim II "Berserkur" Grimsson x


Arngrim was een berserker, die voorkomt in de Hervarar-sage, Gesta Danorum, Lay of Hyndla, een aantal
Faeröerse ballades en de sage van Orvar-Odd in de Noorse mythologie.

Volgens de versies H en U gingArngrim plunderen naar Gardariki en ontmoette hij zijn koning Svafrlami, die op dat moment in het bezit was van Tyrfing. Tyrfing sneed door Arngrims schild en in de grond, waarop Arngrim Svafrlami's hand afsneed, het zwaard greep en hem met zijn eigen wapen doodde. Toen nam Arngrim Svafrlami's dochter Eyfura gevangen
en dwong haar met hem te trouwen.

Versie R vertelt echter dat Arngrim de oorlogsleider van Sigrlami werd en vele veldslagen won en
land en onderdanen veroverde voor de oude koning. Als beloning kreeg Arngrim een hoge positie in het rijk, Eyfura en Tyrfing.

In alle versies van de saga keerde Arngrim terug naar Bolmsö met Eyfura (hoewel versies H en U zeggen dat het het eiland Bolm in Hålogaland was). Ze
kregen twaalf zonen die allemaal in de voetsporen van hun vader volgden
en gek werden. Volgens de U-versie heetten ze Angantyr, Hjörvard, Hervard, Hrani, Barri, Tyrfing, Tind, two Haddings, Bui, Bild en Toki. Volgens de H-versie waren hun namen Angantyr, Hjorvard, Hervard, Hrani, Brami, Barri, Reifnir, Tind, Saeming
en Bui en de twee Haddings (in versie R worden er slechts zes genoemd:
Angantyr, Hjörvard, Hervard, Hrani en de twee Haddings).
