was een vredelievend vorst, die de prediking van het Evangelie toeliet en de belangen des volks, ook door het opwerpen van terpen en zeedijken, zeer bevorderde.
De Geestelijkheid, die ten doel had, om in het westen van Europa door de Franken een Christelijken Staat te stichten, zond nu weldra den ijverigen prediker eligius herwaarts, om onder de heidensche Friezen het evangelie te verkondigen. Hij werd daarin niet verhinderd door den vreedzamen Koning der Friezen adgild I, die zelfs den bisschop wilfried, op deze kusten gestrand, in bescherming nam tegen den Frankischen vorst ebroin, en hem toeliet hier te onderwijzen en te doopen. Aan hem bleek het,dat vele Friezen minder afkeerig waren van het Christendom dan van de Franken
