- In 377, Romeins consul van het Late Keizerrijk.
- Silvanus, zoon van Bonitus, steunde keizer Constantius II tegen Magnentius en verzekerde Constantius' overwinning (353). Hij werd echter door een factie aan het hof van verraad beschuldigd. Twee Frankische officieren, Malaric en Mallobaud, verdedigden hem; de een bood aan Silvanus te halen om hem vrij te pleiten, terwijl de ander als gijzelaar in Romeachterbleef. Maar Silvanus, in paniek door de beschuldiging, riep zichzelf uit tot keizer en werd kort daarna, in 355, vermoord.

- Graaf van de Dienaren, vocht hij in 373 voor keizer Valentinianus I tegen de Saksen en sloot zich in 375 na Valentinianus' dood aan bij Gratianus. Hij vocht tegen de Alemannen die bondgenoten van Valentinianus II waren. In 378 werd hij benoemd tot koning van de Franken.
