    Als stichtingsdatum houden wij 24 mei 1841 aan, de dag waarop de gezusters Pinkers met nog vier andere leden van de Derde Orde van St. Dominicus samen gingen wonen in een eigen Liefdegesticht te Rotterdam.
    Zuster Catharina wordt beschouwd als de stichteres. Zij had de leiding en er ging veel inspiratie van haar uit. De eerste zusters zetten zich in voor arme kinderen, wezen en bejaarden. Zuster Catharina begreep al snel dat ook kinderen van beter gesitueerde ouders leiding en zorg nodig hadden. Met het onderwijs aan deze kinderen had zij een tweevoudig doel voor ogen. Zij wilde zo een financiële basis scheppen voor de liefdewerken ten behoeve van de armen, maar zij vond ook dat een deugdzame gegoede burger invloed uitoefent op de maatschappij.
