    Elisabeth Godefroij Danforth werd geprezen voor de waardige manier waarop zij omgaat met de slaven door de schrijver John Gabriel STEDMAN. Stedman wilde zijn geliefde Joanna en hun zoontje vrijkopen. Hij moest daar 2000 florijnen voor betalen. Hij had dat geld niet dus betaalde Elisabeth. Joanna had daar problemen mee en Joanna koos ervoor om zelf als onderpand voor de schuld zou dienen. Joanna werd gezelschapsame van Elisabeth. Elisabeth liet een huis bouwen in haar tuin voor Joanna en gaf haar 2 slaven. Stedman vertrok uit Suriname en liet zijn gezin achter onder de hoede van Elisabeth en zijn werd gedoopt op 18 januari 1781
