Gradus was beelhouwer en tekenaar, schepper van de "Erfgooiersboom" in Blaricum. Ter herinnering aan de 1000 jarige geschiedenis van de Erfgooiers in 1971. De bronzen versie staat bij de muziektent in het dorp, de orginele eikenhouten versie staat in het voorportaal van de Hervormde kerk. Hij begon zijn loopbaan als ciseleur in Utrecht. Daarna ging hij naar de Rietveld academie, waar hij slaagde als edelsmid. Hij ging naar de Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst. Vanaf 1970 woonde hij in zijn atelier in een bunker in de polder op de Oostermeent. Hij maakte vele schetsen van de Piëta in de Vituskerk. In 1959 en 1977 maakte hij een voettocht naar Lourdes.
