Waar nu de nieuwbouw van architect H.J.M. Ruijssenaars staat aan de Kerkbrink, stond Hof van Holland als één van de belangrijkste ontmoetingsplaatsen in het centrum.
Het logement Hof van Holland ontstond in 1843, toen twee panden werden samengevoegd door R.J. Buwalda. De panden betroffen een tot logement uitgegroeid huis uit 1732 dat was herbouwd na de brand in 1766, en een huis met boerderij uit 1716 dat was verbouwd tot dubbel herenhuis voordat het in 1827 de functie van logement kreeg.
In 1837 werd de diligencefirma Buwalda & Co opgericht met diensten op Amsterdam en later op Utrecht, Loosdrecht, ’s-Graveland, Laren en Vreeland. De diligence bestond tot 1876. In het befaamde hotel-restaurant werden vele bijeenkomsten en veilingen gehouden. In het bijbehorende concertgebouw van I. Gosschalk aan de Herenstraat werden tot in de jaren ’50 plaatopnamen gemaakt en radio-uitzendingen verzorgd.
