Theunis Uilke de Vries was een Nederlands schrijver van vooral historische en sociale romans. Hij was ook actief als dichter, als toneel- en hoorspelschrijver, en hij schreef tevens biografieën en essays. Zoon van Sjoerd [Teunis] de Vries, boterhandelaar, en Elisabeth [Uilkes] Dijkstra. Gehuwd op 12-10-1932 met Aafje Maria Vernes (1908-1975), fysiotherapeute. Uit dit huwelijk werd 1 zoon geboren. Na echtscheiding (17-3-1938) op 29-5-1946 opnieuw gehuwd met Aafje Maria Vernes. Uit dit huwelijk werd 1 dochter geboren.
Na de dood van zijn vrouw Aafje in januari 1975 vond hij in de lerares en wetenschappelijk medewerkster Henriette Buytendijk (1915) een nieuwe levensgezellin. De jaren negentig behoren tot zijn productiefste perioden: zes romans zagen het licht, waaronder het omvangrijke Russische tweeluik Sint-Petersburg (1992) en Terug uit Irkoetsk (1994). Door lichamelijke ongemakken was hij in toenemende mate aan huis gebonden; sinds 1964 woonde hij in de Jordaan, aan de Egelantiersgracht. Na een ziekbed van ruim een jaar overleed hij begin 2005 op 97-jarige leeftijd.
