Notes about Marie Joseph (Rie) Brusse

M.J. (Rie) Brusse was a famous Dutch journalist and writer, and is the most well known member od the "The Brusse Family". Rie started his career as a journalist in 1888 (one month after graduation from a 3 year middle school education) with the newspaper "de Amsterdammer".
At the age of 19 he joined the journalistic staff of "NRC (Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant)". For many years he had his own column "Onder de Menschen (Among the People)". From a series of articles of this column, he composed his famous book "Boefje" (Rascal), about a poor street kid in the city of Rotterdam. Boefje is considered a classic in Dutch literature. It was made into a stage play and a movie. In 1988 "Boefje" was republished in the Netherlands as the 27th printing of this famous book. Rie Brusse became one of the leading journalists at NRC, and travelled to many different places to cover stories for the paper. In 1922 he travelled through Canada by train from coast to coast, accompanied by his eldest son Henk.
Due to the depression years Rie Brusse had to retire early from the NRC in 1932. He moved to the town of Schoorl and joined the "Alkmaarse Courant". He wrote for this newspaper till the time of his death in 1941.
Many of Brusse's articles/stories in the NRC were reprinted as books, most of them published by his brothers publishing company "W.L. & J. Brusse Uitgevers Maatschappij NV" in Rotterdam.
Some of his well known works are:
1- "Een dierenkolonie in een grote stad" (published 1898)
2 - "Van af- tot Aanmonsteren" (published 1899)
3 - "Boefje" (first published 1903)
4 - "Landloperij"(published 1906)
5 - "Het rosse leven en sterven van de Zandstraat" (Published 1912)
6 - "Vijfentwingtig Jaar Onder de Menschen" (Published 1920)
7 - "Rotterdamsche Zedeprenten" (Published 1921)

The city of Rotterdam named a street after M.J.Brusse in 1946 to honour the famous journalist the "Brusse Straat".
