In deze familiegeschiedenis ligt de nadruk op de levensverhalen van de familieleden, te beginnen bij Gellius Joustra en Geertje Bruinsma die in 1869 in het Drentse Hijkersmilde trouwden. Beiden stierven in 1892 als gevolg van tyfusbesmetting. Hun levensbeschrijving wordt gevolgd door die van hun kinderen en verdere nageslacht, dat in Drenthe en het aangrenzende oostelijke deel van Friesland, met name in Appelscha woonde. In laatstgenoemde provincie lag ook de bakermat van dit geslacht, dat afstamt van Gellius Jacobs die rond 1696 in Joure werd geboren. Nazaten kwamen in het begin van de negentiende eeuw vanuit die plaats in Smilde terecht. Behalve aan de familie Joustra is aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van Smilde en Appelscha, het boerderijtje van Gellius en Geertje aan de Oude Scheijdt te Hijkersmilde en aan verschillende andere families uit de omgeving, zoals Hoogerbruge, Fernhout, Harders, Popken en Schaafsma. Het met veel foto's geillustreerde boek besluit met een parenteel en een genealogie van de familie Joustra en met deelgenealogieen van aanverwante geslachten, zoals Mars, Pater en Schotanus.
