Harmen Jans Groen ontving als beloning voor zijn heldendaden van de Maatschappij tot het Nut van 't Algemeen een flinke gift van f 162,-. Uit naam van Koning Willem 111 ontving hij een Friese klok, een zil­veren tabaksdoos ter waarde van 42 zilveren rijksdaalders en een gou­den ring met een kroon en een diamant. Toen dit bekend werd waren er mensen die uit jaloezie over gingen tot kwaadsprekerij. Sommigen vertelden zelfs dat hij nooit één heldhaftige daad had verricht. Voorts werd verteld dat hij een slecht persoon was die leefde van roverijen etc. De Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen stelde een onderzoek in en wist een groot deel van de negatieve geruchten tegen te spreken. Werd er eerst nog verteld dat Groen deze daden nooit had verricht, later werd alleen nog maar verteld dat het allemaal een beetje overdreven was.
