De Friese gebieden worden vanaf ca 800 een deel van het oostelijke deel van het Frankische Rijk onder Karel de Grote.

Formeel blijft Friesland tot 1648 (Westfaalse Vrede) deel uitmaken van het Heilige Rooms Duitse Rijk.

Friesland wordt dan niet meer door een eigen vorstenhuis geregeerd, maar erkent de Duitse Koning/Keizer als landsheer. In tijden van oorlog wordt uit de zogenaamde Hoofdelingen een Potestaat gekozen, die het leger aanvoert.

Radbodus de IIde, is de negende en laatste Koning van Friesland geworden. Hy was zyn broeder zeer ongelyk. Ende wierde om zyne Tyrannie tegens de Christenen van Carolo Magno intwee Veldslagen overwonnen, ende uit zyn Rycke gejaagt, waar door hy vlugte na zyn Moeije de Koninginne in Denemarken. Ende heeft alzo het Friesche Koninkryk een einde genomen10), als het gestaan hadde 383 jaaren.
